  1. It’s no good trying to work when you cannot think straight. When I woke up this morning I felt a bit thick in the head, but I had this essay to do for tomorrow. I really cannot work properly when I am suffering with a cold, and today is no exception. Now it is Monday and my head is going round in circles, so I had better stop. All yesterday I was feeling awful and had a terrible sore throat. I must have picked it up in the cinema on Saturday because it was very hot and everyone was coughing and sneezing. Even on Friday I didn’t feel quite right.

  1. One’s mouth usually waters when delicious food is described. I am going to describe my favourite meal to you in such a way that your mouth will begin to water. My favourite meal is Lasagne with layers of warm creamy cheese, spinach pasta with crisp burnt edges, and steaming mince and tomato. Please pass me a serviette, I need to wipe my mouth.

If I were able to make some changes to the buildings and grounds of my school, my

priority would be to build a bigger library. My school has a very small library with very little books. I think it would be a good idea to add audio and video to the library as well as internet so that children can look up additional facts which they cannot find in their textbooks. If our library is improved in this way I think that the children’s marks will improve largely because they will have access to better explanations of their work than found in their textbooks.

When the time comes for me to leave home I think that I shall feel excited and sad at the same time. I shall be excited about all the new doors opening for me, and all the great opportunities that are out there. At the same time I shall feel sad about leaving all my familiar surroundings.

3. Paragraph A has short sentences that are mostly the same length while paragraph B has sentences that vary hugely in length. Paragraph B makes good use of commas, inverted commas (they are used in the paragraph to indicate onomatopoeia), full stops and semicolons. Paragraph A uses only full stops. Paragraph A is merely a list of facts and does not, like Paragraph B, make use of emotive language and onomatopoeia. Paragraph B also contains a conclusion while Paragraph A does not.

World Wonders…. Makes me wonder.

By Hjalmar Rall

In a recent interview with the editor of World Wonders, a book containing absurd world records, the editor gave many reasons (most of them invalid) for publishing the book. He denied all negative statements that the interviewer made about World Wonders. He spoke very highly of the book, calling it the best selling annual of all time and stating that it was educational and that it caused people to strive to reach new heights of human endeavour.

As a book reviewer for various well-known magazines, I cannot agree with the editor. I honestly do not think that not cutting your fingernails for years counts as human endeavour, and neither is stuffing too many hamburgers into your mouth. I also do not agree with him that World Wonders is an educational book. Of course, there are one or two interesting natural records, but the problem is that these are only a few. The rest of the book contains ludicrous nonsense. The most entertaining part of the book for me, is laughing at how puerile it is.

I personally believe that books such as World Wonders that consist of absolutely ridiculous records should not be published. Why not publish a book that contains mostly natural records of which many are educational? If World Wonders is to be changed to this format, it does not mean that it should contain no trivial human records. There should just not be ridiculous records. Doing this will probably reduce the popularity of the book, but will it not be a better concept?

Diary entry

23 March 2014

Dear diary

Today has been an absolutely wonderful day. Boet took me for a flight in his bushplane,”Jinx”. After checking the runway for holes, we climbed into the plane and taxied to the runway. When the engine was warm enough Boet pushed the throttle forward. Before I had even noticed that we were moving we had left the ground behind and I could see our shadow quickly shrinking.

Flying is the most wonderful feeling. The whole world seems to be spread out beneath you. Miles upon miles of Karoo bushes and the shiny roofs and green water tanks of the town. I just wish I could skip to tomorrow morning when I’m going to fly again.

Yours secretly

Dear diary

I wish today would end. I’ve been sitting here at my desk all day and I’m so tired that I won’t be surprised if I fall asleep before I finish writing this. Those three tests are still lying blank in front of me. I can’t remember anything that I learnt, I’m just too tired and my headache is too intense.

I’m just going to sit here and wait for school to end.

The clocks’ hands seem to be frozen. It feels like hours have passed and that clock is still stuck at quarter past two. When is this day and it’s eternal headaches and blank pages going to end?

Yours tiredly
