  1. It’s no good trying to work when you cannot think straight. When I woke up this morning I felt a bit thick in the head, but I had this essay to do for tomorrow. I really cannot work properly when I am suffering with a cold, and today is no exception. Now it is Monday and my head is going round in circles, so I had better stop. All yesterday I was feeling awful and had a terrible sore throat. I must have picked it up in the cinema on Saturday because it was very hot and everyone was coughing and sneezing. Even on Friday I didn’t feel quite right.

  1. One’s mouth usually waters when delicious food is described. I am going to describe my favourite meal to you in such a way that your mouth will begin to water. My favourite meal is Lasagne with layers of warm creamy cheese, spinach pasta with crisp burnt edges, and steaming mince and tomato. Please pass me a serviette, I need to wipe my mouth.

If I were able to make some changes to the buildings and grounds of my school, my

priority would be to build a bigger library. My school has a very small library with very little books. I think it would be a good idea to add audio and video to the library as well as internet so that children can look up additional facts which they cannot find in their textbooks. If our library is improved in this way I think that the children’s marks will improve largely because they will have access to better explanations of their work than found in their textbooks.

When the time comes for me to leave home I think that I shall feel excited and sad at the same time. I shall be excited about all the new doors opening for me, and all the great opportunities that are out there. At the same time I shall feel sad about leaving all my familiar surroundings.

3. Paragraph A has short sentences that are mostly the same length while paragraph B has sentences that vary hugely in length. Paragraph B makes good use of commas, inverted commas (they are used in the paragraph to indicate onomatopoeia), full stops and semicolons. Paragraph A uses only full stops. Paragraph A is merely a list of facts and does not, like Paragraph B, make use of emotive language and onomatopoeia. Paragraph B also contains a conclusion while Paragraph A does not.
